Black bears cause chaos

  • Black bear mother watched with three baby bears and mingled with the paparazzi crowd
  • Driven through the snow masses of the Dunraven Pass
  • Capture an unforgettable evening mood in the Lamar Valley

Actually we wanted to get up at 6 a.m. today, but we got 7 a.m. Sleeps a lot better on the king-size bed than in the roof tent. After a simple breakfast we drive back to the park. This morning is again the most beautiful weather. There are a lot of people at a parking lot, so we stop in the hope that they have discovered something extraordinary. But we are probably too late, there is said to be a bison carcass lying a great distance away, which the wolf pack must have torn during the night, but has since been chased away again by the bison.

When we drive through the Tower Falls again, there is again a great deal of traffic chaos. We park the car on the side of the road and march forward. In the dense undergrowth of the forest, a mother black bear with an incredible three cubs can be made out. The little ones play with each other, climb up the tree trunks, a wonderful sight. After a few less successful shots, we continue south. The route leads over the Dunraven Pass near Mount Washburn, which is lined with heavy snow. In the Hayden Valley, which is known for grizzly sightings, we see one through a tourist's binoculars.

After we have turned back, we stop again at the Tower Falls. Again we see bighorn sheep before we get back to the black bear family. Luck seems to have taken us further, as soon as we arrive the bears move towards the enormous pack of photographers. We mix in and take some great shots. The sneaks have long since fallen below the safety distance of 100 meters and have approached to approx. 25 meters. The park rangers have their hands full keeping the crowds away from the bears. Crazy scenes, but this is how nature conservation seems to be in the 21st century. On the way back we can still observe a herd of bighorn sheep - this time also with impressively horned goats.

We used a break in the motel to surf the web, watch TV, write a diary and above all to sort through the numerous recordings. When we drive to the Lamar Valley again in the evening, thick clouds come up. We will probably never forget the evening mood that awaits us now. The colors of the setting sun, the light rain, the resulting double rainbow, the lush green river plain, the grazing bison herds and the gloomy cloud cover create an incredible atmosphere. Further on we only see a few prong brackets. When we have almost reached the motel, a red fox suddenly stands in the middle of the street. A great way to end an eventful day.
