Island in the Sky

  • View through Mesa Arch of Utah's Canyonlands
  • breathtaking view of the canyons of the Colorado and Green River at Grand View Point from Table Mountain

After the second night in the tent at Drinks Canyon Campground, we pack our things at 8 o'clock. For today a visit to Canyonlands National Park is on the program. Refuel for a moment, buy ice cream and we are off to the Island in the Sky area of the vast national park. Some table mountains - so-called mesas - can already be seen from afar. The first highlight is the Mesa Arch. This is located directly on the 360m high abyss with a wonderful view of the deep gorges and rock peaks of the Colorado Canyon behind. The only downer, my Ray-Ban sunglasses fall on the floor so unhappily that the glass and frame broke.

The next Green River Overlook gives us an even stronger impression of these dimensions. The Colorado and Green River have cut a further 300 m below Table Mountain into the interior of the earth. An absolutely unique setting. After a winding drive over the plain and hills, we go on a hike to two viewpoints at the Upheaval Dome. Again the sun burns mercilessly from the sky and that already in the morning. So don't forget to bring water with you.

The next highlight is the Grand View Point at the other end of the street. This is where Table Mountain ends and on both sides our gaze wanders over the gigantic canyons of the two rivers. You really feel like you're on an island in heaven, hence the name of this park section.

Finally we make a stop at the somewhat disappointing Dead Horse Point. Another lookout point down on a loop of the Colorado River. But after all of the foregoing, we are only moderately enthusiastic about this. Especially since we find the $ 10 entry price to Utah State Park unreasonable. Now we drive back to Moab where we stay in a double room at the Adventure Inn for one night. For dinner we go to a local pizzeria.
