Not much new in the west

  • Skype with grandparents, parents and Niki
  • Continue towards Salt Lake City
  • Camping in the Uinta National Forest

I take my time comfortably. After breakfast I call my grandparents, Niki and then my parents on Skype. I also watch the World Cup in the live stream, do the accounting for the travel section with Oli and pack my things.

Then I drive north on Highway 89 towards Salt Lake City. The route is relatively barren and has little to see. Finally the highway joins Interstate I15. The traffic increases and the route becomes up to six lanes wide. Not to be missed here is the express driving stiffener, on which you either pay or sit more than one occupant in the vehicle. Every now and then you can see down to Utah Lake and the valley is now densely populated. Shortly after Provo I leave the interstate and want to see the Timpanogos caves in the national monument of the same name. All of a sudden I find myself in a narrow, wild canyon, which is part of the Uinta National Forest. What a contrast to the just now densely populated plain. Spontaneously I decide to spend the night here. In the Visitors Center I find out more about the region and the camping options. I drive a little deeper into the densely wooded canyon and get to the Granite Flat Campground.

In the last rays of the sun I make a campfire and grill my sirloin steaks and make myself salad. As soon as the sun has disappeared behind the mountain, it gets noticeably cooler. Finally I am back to over 2000 meters above sea level. Then I use the rest of the evening to finish accounting, listen to music and write a diary.
