We continue with the truck camper

  • Tour of the SS Klondike
  • Buy supplies
  • Pick-up and instruction in Whitehorse
  • Car parked for the next three weeks
  • Let's go on the Klondike Highway
  • Great secluded campsite on Frenchman Lake in the Yukon wilderness

At 9 o'clock in the morning we made an agreement at the Mannu and Chrigu hotel. We drive to the Fraserway camper rental and inquire about the car, which should be ready in an hour. So we have a leisurely breakfast with Tim Hortons. Then we take a look at the inside of the SS Klondike. The paddle steamer is full of time-honored objects and is therefore protected as a museum. It gives the visitor an authentic insight into the time of the gold rush.

Since the camper attachment still has to be repositioned on the truck, we drive to the Walmart and do the most necessary purchases. However, the food selection here is pretty bad. Back at Fraserway we will be privy to all the details of the luxurious and brand new truck campers in German. What a monstrous vehicle with all conceivable harassment. Even the side can still be extended so that there is space for the table and the extra bed. In the much wider range of the superstore, we buy the rest of the things we need. Now reload and park my car for the next three weeks. At the next stop we stock up on local Yukon Brew Chilkoot beer. So nothing stands in the way of the start.

We are driving north on the Klondike Highway towards Dawson City. Typical for the far north, the route leads through vast forests and along lakes and rivers. We stop a few times to enjoy the view and to take some souvenir photos. We are really fascinated by the splendor of colors of some of the lakes, which shine in a really kitschy turquoise color. In the evening we arrive in Carmacks and turn onto the Campbell Highway. From this we get some great views of the wide river valley below. A little later a road branches off to the nearby Frenchman Lake. We find what we are looking for right at the first campground. After a short stretch over an extremely rough stretch, we have our very own place at the idyllic reflecting lake.

We light the campfire and drink a cold beer to celebrate the day. The weather is still dry and pleasantly warm. Animal sounds can be heard again and again. Which could be elk and wolves. We roast wonderful steaks and salmon, plus rice with broccholi. Although it is already half past eleven in the evening, the sun is still above the horizon, now covered by clouds. The resulting mood with the reflecting, discolored evening clouds in the crystal clear water is fabulous and a grandiose welcome to the Yukon for Mänu and Chrigu. Now we set up our comfortable beds and go to sleep.
