The morning starts rainy. We have breakfast in the dry before we set off. First you have to drive the route back on the Klondike Highway and from there to Dawson City. After the gravel road of the Dempster Highway the car is really dirty. Cloudy but meanwhile dry, we first visit the Midnight Dome viewpoint with a great all-round view of the city, the Yukon, the ugly remains of the gold mining and the vast surrounding wilderness.
Then we visit the town of Dawson City, which I have fond memories of. Almost 5 years ago we had one of the highlights of our trip in the Diamond Tooth Gerties game saloon. Unfortunately, this is currently not open and our program is crowded. After some shopping, a drink, refueling and a tour of the unpaved roads, we took the free ferry to the other side of the Yukon. This is where the Top of the World Highway begins towards the US border. After a good 100 kilometers over mountain ridges, through tundra and forests, we reach the northernmost inch of the American continent. Now just put the usual border procedure behind us and then we have arrived in Alaska. The route continues lonely and stony. The first place worth mentioning - assuming you can even say so - is the cult place Chicken. The former gold rush town actually only consists of a few houses, souvenir shops, a campground and a saloon, the ceiling of which is adorned with hundreds of huts. Since the campsites are not particularly attractive here, we continue towards Tok. On the way we find a wonderful campground at the Little Fork River and can now fully enjoy the sunny weather again. We take the overdue shower outside in front of the camper in the glorious evening sun. In addition, they cook on the fire and after a long day they go to bed late again.
