Along the huge Kluane National Park

  • Continue south on the ALCAN
  • Bald eagles seen near the road
  • Short hike on the outskirts of Kluane National Park
  • Watch the grizzly on the street
  • lonely campsite by the Takhini River

Once again we fry pancakes for breakfast and distort them in the sun. Then we start to continue towards Whitehorse. The promontory of the St-Elias-Mountains towers higher and higher on our right. The highway runs along the valley shaped by the Kluane River. Once we see a majestic bald eagle sailing in the thermals not far from the road and later a closely related golden eagle. Soon after, we see the mighty Kluane Lake. The Alaska Highway now runs along the shore of the lake for a while. At the Visitors Center, we find out about a short hike nearby, which we then tackle.

We stop for lunch, warm up leftover food and dine outside in the sun. As we are talking about the missed bear encounters as we continue our journey, Mänu spotted a handsome grizzly on the side of the road. He comfortably picks berries from the bushes on the roadside and we can watch him for a while. A conciliatory experience, after all, we secretly hoped for one or two more bears. Soon afterwards we reach Haines Junction where we take a coffee break in the local bakery. Now we continue towards Whitehorse. On the way we turn onto an unpaved cul-de-sac, which brings us to the lonely and cozy campsite on the Takhini River. We grill to ourselves and enjoy the evening sun over the river. Another salmon we caught ourselves is waiting for us.
