North again

  • Bought a warm outdoor jacket
  • Buy fresh produce for the next few days
  • Have the car checked
  • Start driving again towards Dawson City
  • Stop at the Five Finger Rapids

After the last few short nights, sleep in is on the program again today. By the time I have breakfast and showered, it is already 10 a.m. Now I drive to the center and buy the outdoor jacket I have been looking for for a long time at the well-equipped Coast Mountain Sport. An ideal warmth / weight ratio and small pack size make it the ideal travel companion to complement my rain jacket. Now I have a specialist throw my tires at the tire dealer again; as expected, they are still found to be good. At the superstore, I stock up on other foods - primarily fresh produce. Now let the tank and tire pressure be checked again.

Then around 2 p.m. we can start our journey north again. My goal for today is to go as far as possible so that I can start the Dempster Highway adventure as early as possible tomorrow. To the music I downloaded yesterday and in mostly sunny weather I drive quickly towards my destination. The first harbingers of the Indian Summer can already be seen. Most of the deciduous trees have already turned bright yellow. That is exactly the main reason why I want to go up here again. The splendor of colors on the autumn tundra must be terrific.

I make a short stop at the Five Finger Rapids viewpoint. At the time of the gold rush, these dreaded rocks and rapids were the biggest obstacle for the Yukon paddle steamers. Here I eat something small and read the “Milepost” - the street Bible for journeys to the north - about the upcoming section of the route. The towns of Carmacks, Pelly Crossing, and Steward Crossing on Klondike HIghway are little more than supply locations. Finally, I finished my today's Farht and camp on the Moose Creek Campground. Here I enjoy the sun on this extremely warm day. I split wood and make a fire. Then it is really cooked again. The menu includes peppers stuffed with minced meat and a mixed stew of potatoes, carrots, peas and quinoa.
