Early onward travel: Bye Grand Teton

  • Tour of Grand Teton National Park in the rain
  • Visit to the Park Visitors Center
  • Herd of mule deer spotted
  • Counted freight train with 175 wagons

The night is surprisingly relatively dry, but that changes as soon as we get up at 8 o'clock and have breakfast outside. We drive back to the Willow Flats and the Oxbow Bend of the Snake River to look out for wildlife. Unfortunately, we can only dream of the beautiful scenery that could be seen here when the sky was clear. The yellow deciduous trees really stand out from the uniform gray. The Teton Mountains are hidden behind a thick, gray blanket of clouds. From this cloud cover it rains practically all morning. In combination with the frosty temperatures, this is very little fun for hiking.

On the park road we drive south past Jenny Lake to Moose. Here we take a look at the interesting Visitors Center and watch a short documentary film about the park. At least here we get to see the two most famous park residents - elk and bear. We continue down to Schwabacher's Landing on the edge of the alluvial area of the Snake River. Here we see beavers' castle and dams, but their inhabitants remain hidden from us. The next detour takes us to Mormon Row. Here are the ruins of some Mormon farms. A popular photo subject when the weather is nice, but only moderately attractive today. Finally we drive a few more kilometers on the Moose-Wilson-Strasse. At the same time we get a little forgiving to see a group of mule deer.

We decide to leave Grand Teton National Park early and use the rest of the day to continue our journey. Because tomorrow and in the next few days there is no improvement in the weather in sight. We travel south on Highways 89, 30 and 16 via Jackson, Alpine, Afton, Cockeville, Sage and Evanston. The weather in southern Wyoming is on the friendlier side. Like the weather, the landscape is becoming increasingly drier. Shortly before the Utah border we stop at the roadside and cook a simple tomato soup like nomads and have fun about it. A freight train with an unbelievable 175 wagons drives by. Huge herds of cows line the wide fields. In the twilight and early night we drive on to Provo where we find an inexpensive motel accommodation.
