The city of angels: Los Angeles

  • Sunrise in the Hidden Valley of Joshua Tree National Park
  • Drive to Keys View Lookout
  • Continue towards Los Angeles
  • Up to 10-lane freeways and four-story bridges
  • Walking distance to Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame

At 6.30 a.m. we get up early to watch the sunrise over the Hidden Valley. We're not alone in this. Soon afterwards, some of the rocks in the distance turn reddish, just before they are illuminated by the first rays of the day's sun. The Joshua Trees make this place a truly unique setting. In the park we drive to the Keys View lookout point. From up here you can see all the way to Palm Springs and across the San Andreas Trench. The dreaded Big One earthquake could be triggered at any time by the seismic activity of this plate.

Then we begin our journey down to the Los Angeles suburbs. The city of angels announces itself from afar in an unpleasant way: thick smog and a lot of traffic. No wonder with over 17.8 million people in Greater Los Angeles. With the help of the navigation device we manage to fight our way through the labyrinth of freeways and other streets. Four-story bridges and up to 10 lanes are a reality here. And yet the traffic is often slow to move. In the multi-city city of Los Angeles, the right starting point for a visit is the alpha and omega. We have noted a few options and let the navigation system guide us there. In any case, the area around the first address is not at all inviting, so we drive on again. Finally we find accommodation in the conveniently located Coral Sands Motel. This is within walking distance of the world-famous Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard. That's where we march, eat and read the names of the starred personalities from film and show business.
