- Onward journey from the greater Los Angeles area to the north
- Stopovers in Malibu and on the beach in front of Santa Barbara
So today we are leaving the mega-metropolis of Los Angeles again. We pack our things, buy our breakfast in the nearby grocery store and dine outside in the wonderfully warm sun. Then we set off towards Malibu. Despite Sunday the usual traffic chaos awaits us. Progress along the busy coast is slow. The area around Malibu along the steep coast is beautiful, but much too built up. Another place in my opinion that sells Hollywood and as much more interesting than it really is. We take a short walk by the lagoon. On Sundays, every local really seems to spend the day on the beach. Getting hold of parking spaces is anything but easy and expensive.
So we will soon leave Malibu behind us. Niki continues in the direction of Santa Barbara. We drive to the travel guide recommended Arroyo Burro Beach. Here we use one of the picnic tables to soak up some sun and read. The lively beach is really a wonderful place, even if this Sunday is anything but lonely. Surfers lie in the waves of the Pacific and children splash around near the shore. After almost two hours we continue our journey. Then it's time to find a place to have dinner. We warm ourselves in the picnic area of a state park a canned soup and make a salad. The soup - intended as an emergency ration - is a leftover from my travel section with Chrigu and Mänu from Alaska. After the beautiful sunset over the Pacific, we continue to San Luis Obispo. There we find a campsite for the night. Tomorrow the most spectacular part of Highway No. 1 begins there.
