"Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie!"

  • Briefly visit other Tufas on the northern edge of Mono Lake
  • Visit Bodie State Historic Park from the gold rush along the way
  • Continue along Highway 395
  • Stop at Taylor Creek Recreation Area on Lake Tahoe in the hope of spotting black bears fishing for salmon
  • Continue along Lake Tahoes to Greenville

The bedbug bites still itch like hell, which makes the nights only moderately relaxing at the moment. After all, you can sleep a little better in the comfortable bed of the motel. Then there is Pancakes in dinner from the previous evening. I also order one Cinnamon bun, but didn't count the North American portions. The thing is a meal alone.

So really saturated, we set off northwards. After about an hour and the last few kilometers on a rather rough gravel road, we reach the Bodie State Historic Park. The Ghosttown is one of the best preserved examples from the time of the gold rush. Unlike in many other places, everything here has been protected as a Historic Park and not commercialized. The ruins and rotting houses give Bodie its own charm. Thanks to the region's low humidity, Bodie is now considered to be best preserved ghost town in the USA.

The city was considered one of the wildest and most lawless cities in the West during its heyday in the 1880s. We have received a quote from a little girl who was to move to Bodie with her parents and who wrote in her diary: “Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie!”.

Between the houses, simple huts, outhouses, the school, a church, the bank, a shop and much more lies all sorts of junk, from old cars and their rusted remains, to mine cars, tools and machines, cans and Glass. After the discovery of a very profitable gold vein, the city briefly housed around 10,000 residents. After a drop in the price of gold had already led to a sharp reduction in the population, sealed a Great fire in 1932 the fate of the city.

A small museum shows other pieces worth seeing. For example, the pretty hearse, bottles, books, saloon mirrors and everyday objects are exhibited here. Around 3 p.m. we start our onward journey. There is still a long way to go, after all, we have to return our car to Canada in 11 days.

We will make another stop on Lake Tahoe a. At the Taylor Creek Recreation Area we walk along the short Rainbow Trail in the hope of spotting black bears fishing for salmon. The stream is full of dead and almost dead red Kokanee salmon, which were introduced here by humans. No bears can be seen, there are probably too many onlookers here. We use the picnic area at the parking lot to warm our leftovers.

Unfortunately, it is now getting darker and earlier and so we don't notice the beautiful route along Lake Tahoe and the northern Sierra Nevada. On the Highway 89 we continue until we finally reach the remote area around 10 o'clock in the evening Greenville to reach. Here we find a nice motel for the night.
