On foot through Rios Centro

  • Take the bus to Cinelandia to Centro Rios
  • On foot through the colorful mix of skyscrapers and magnificent buildings from the colonial era
  • Visit the Theatro Municipal and the lovely old Portuguese library
  • Enjoy the cozy ambience of the street bars

Around 9 a.m. we start with our fruit and yoghurt breakfast. Then we talk a little with Claudio, who always has to go to work late. Lucy joins them after her first lesson. We'll be on our way a little before noon. We go by bus to Centro Rios.

We start with the busy one Floriano Square with many outdoor cafes and snack bars. Due to a lack of Portuguese understanding, we get an orange juice with mint. Special, but definitely tasty. The baroque theater, which is well worth seeing, is already here Theatro Municipal into the field of vision, definitely one of the most beautiful buildings in Rio. Unfortunately, all sightseeing tours inside are already booked for today. Continue to Largo da Carioca, where a small market is stationed and above it the old Portuguese Sao Francisco da Penitencia Church from the 17th century.

We can achieve this through other extremely busy streets Real Gabinete Português de Leitura. In the splendid library, as if out of a picture book, you feel as though you have been transported back centuries. Treasures of old books are stored here. Last but not least, the somewhat disappointing one waits because it is unexpectedly simple Paco Imperial to us. The Portuguese king once resided here in his Brazilian exile during Napoleon's time.

Right next door in the Travessa do Comercio the whole street has been covered with tables and chairs, which slowly fill up towards the end of the day. We grab a seat, drink wine and beer and watch the goings-on and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. We get to know other specifics that are typical of the country. My beer contains 6dl and Niki's table wine is also sweetened. One of the unexpectedly little English-speaking Brazilians explains it to us and says that the bar opposite is a lot better.

Then we look for a restaurant and finally end up in the Rio Scenarium. A kind of mixture of restaurant, bar and dance hall. Too expensive for food alone. We then take the excellent subway back to Leme.
