Santiago de Chile - between classic and modern

  • Bus trip to the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile
  • Buying a replacement lens for my camera
  • Stroll through the busy city center of the metropolis

After two nights in Valparaiso, we continue today Santiago de Chile. We march with sacks and bags to the nearby bus station and buy a ticket for the regular buses. In just under two hours in the bus you go back inland to the Chilean capital. Santiago de Chile is with over 5 million inhabitants in the metropolitan region has grown into one of the largest cities in South America and thus political and economic center of the longest country in the world. The city is said to be on an area of 40 x 40 kilometers spread out at the foot of the Andes.

Upon arrival we buy tickets for the onward journey to Puerto Montt, which will be the day after tomorrow. With the ultra-modern metro we drive from the bus station to the center. We have a chic one there for the next two nights Apartment rented in a new high-rise building, which is significantly more attractive in terms of price than a comparable hotel.

Again by metro we go to the huge one Mall Costanera Center. The glass skyscraper that belongs to the complex is already visible from afar. There is one of the Sony stores in the country and the main reason for our visit. Because a few days ago my zoom lens stopped working and a repair - if at all possible - will only be considered in Switzerland. What I didn't think was possible is the fact that Sony SAL70400GM2 is in stock! The purchase is quite a hole in the travel budget, but without a zoom it is hardly possible to take spectacular animal photos! Next to an artificial waterfall we drink a fresh fruit juice before going back.

After the valuable cargo is unloaded in the room, we march to the Plaza das Armas. The central square of Santiago was already laid out by the Spanish city founders. The image of today's inner city is only rarely adorned by venerable buildings; the glass facades of the skyscrapers often reflect the aging neighboring buildings. At Niki's request, we end up in a disappointing veggie restaurant.
