- Tour to Plaza de la Moneda - the Chilean seat of government in Santiago de Chile
- Visit the fish market and dine at the Mercado Central
- Visit the Museum of Human Rights on the crimes of the Pinochet dictatorship
The first thing we will see today is the Plaza de la Moneda, Seat of the Chilean government. A national flag of enormous proportions flies at this historic place. On September 11, 1973, the armed forces of Chile under the command of Pinochet - and with the support of the United States - overthrew the democratically elected government of Chile. The Socialist President Salvador Allende took his own life after the bombing of the presidential palace. A military junta took power and appointed Augusto Pinochet to their chairman.
From that day on he reigned dictator Chile until 1990, when he was never democratically elected. During his dictatorship, he stood out for an enormous number Human rights violations, responsible for several thousands of murdered people and tens of thousands of cases of torture. He escaped trial for health reasons and died in 2006.
The alleys are still full of people today, especially in the area of the Plaza das Armas. We march on to the Mercado Centralwhere fish and seafood are available for purchase.
The venerable market hall is now largely home to chic restaurants. A little further is the pretty fruit market before we go back to eat at the Mercado Central.
The menu includes Chilean and Peruvian specialties such as the national drink Pisco Sour and the fish pickled in lemon juice, known as ceviche. Everything tastes great, but the cocktail made us all a little tired.
Take the subway to Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos HumanosIn the modern building the dictatorship of Pinochet with all its crimes is thematized and well worth seeing. Unfortunately, there is hardly any information in English.
Back in the apartment we relax a little before we go out again to eat. In the evening we plan the further course of the trip and book the flight from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas in just over a week.
