Mount Fitz Roy in view

  • Bus trip to the trekking mecca El Chaltén
  • Search for camping material for a planned two-day hike
  • Hike to the crystal clear Laguna Capri
  • Observe the red-headed Magellanic woodpecker

Our bus trip to begins at 8 a.m. El Chalten. Once again, the same backdrop is presented: enormously spacious and dry Pampas as far as the eye can see. Only the snow-capped mountains on the horizon, some hills and the lakes Lago Argentino and Viedma offer a little variety. Soon, from a great distance, the imposing Mount Fitz Roy (3406 m) and the pointed Cerro Torre (3128 m) see which we are now driving directly towards.

Immediately before our arrival at the bus station of the 400 souls village the bus puts another Stop at the information center of the northern part of Los Glaciares National Park, where all visitors are instructed about the existing hiking trails. We want to do some of them in the next few days, as long as the weather is okay. In any case, today it is already excellent! We are accommodated in a four-bed room in the Albergue Los Viajeros. Soon after, we'll go Search for camping equipment for the planned two-day trip up to the spectacular Laguna de los Tres. At the moment, however, this cannot be found anywhere, as all of them are rented.

We buy our lunch in the well-stocked local supermarket and then go on our first hike strengthened. The hiking trail direction Laguna Capri leads up to a pleasant extent through mature mountain forest. With pleasant temperatures and at times quite a bit of wind, we reach the after a good two hours crystal clear mountain lake. Here we rest a little and enjoy the splendid Panorama with a view of the Cerro Fitz Roy and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Today, of all days, I don't have my telephoto lens with me, as we meet several of them twice on the way back red-headed Magellanic woodpeckers. The largest - not extinct - woodpecker species only lives in the extreme south of the continent.

In the evening we finally find camping material for our trekking adventure.
