Visit to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

  • Day trip by ferry across the Rio de la Plata to Uruguay
  • Withdraw US dollars from an ATM
  • Explore the pretty old town of Colonia del Sacramento

Unfortunately, there is no time to sleep in after yesterday's performance. Get up at 5.45 a.m. and get ready for a day trip to Uruguay. A taxi should go to the ferry port, but the taxi driver drops us off at the wrong ferry terminal. Time is of the essence and we are wondering about the right place. Half an hour late, we rush into it The turmoil at the ferry terminal. Queuing for Checkin and customs in order to finally get on board the fast ferry a few minutes after 8 a.m. Phu, take a deep breath and enjoy the 50 km long crossing on the brown Rio de la Plata.

After about an hour we arrived in Uruguay. Right at the ferry terminal, we change a few dollars into Uruguayan pesos and set off for them manageable old townwhich is under the protection of UNESCO. We climb the steep steps of the time-honored Lighthouse, to be able to take a look over the city and coast. In the Cobblestone streets numerous tourists can be found. The former smuggler town of the Portuguese was later taken over by the Spanish.

We obtain numerous from the BBVA branch U.S. dollar to go back to Argentina on the black market and finance our remaining days in Argentina. The beautiful old buildings in the historic core are increasingly being displaced in the charmless new town. Partly standing photogenic classic cars parked in the streets, but somehow I can't shake the feeling that they are only there for tourists.

We eat overpriced near the old port and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Thanks to a look at the cell phone, we realize that in Uruguay we are in a other time zone and therefore have to make the way back soon.

The pretty town may be worth a visit, but it doesn't offer the same splendor as the Brazilian colonial cities like Paraty or Ouro Preto. Why the place functions among the top 15 highlights of all of South America on a Lonely Planet remains a mystery to us. Slightly disappointed, but with increased cash reserves we board the ferry to Return to Buenos Aires.
