Lost in the jungle

  • Lost in the jungle during the unplanned five hour morning walk
  • Monkeys have looted food supplies
  • Hungry we go to the river
  • Hours of waiting for the boat in the scorching sun
  • Saving return to Rurrenabaque

Before sunrise we walk into the jungle. After a while we leave the cleared path and march criss-cross through the rainforest in search of the unmistakable howler monkeys. Guide Tomba doesn't even bother to clear the way and we fight our way through the thicket. We get pretty close to the monkeys, but instead of looking for them effectively, Tomba suddenly gets nervous. He beats everything in his way with his machete. It soon becomes clear why: He has completely lost his bearings!

Instead of following the way back, we somehow wander randomly through the jungle. Again and again he makes us wait and starts looking for the way, but everything unsuccessful. When it hasn't appeared for over 30 minutes after a good 3 hours, we slowly get restless. In particular the English couple, who would still have the flight to La Paz today, after yesterday simply no return boat was available due to the elections. The green Hell verily few. Only that Position of the sun after we can roughly estimate the direction. Then Tomba finds us again and we come across a river that we can roughly orientate ourselves on. We drink Water from a thick lianathat stores a considerable amount of drinking water. In fact, a little later we find one of the paths back to the lodge. Now it's time to hurry so that we can catch the boat and the two of them their flight at 6 p.m.

Back at the lodge the follow next bad news. We have come to terms with the fact that there is no longer any clean drinking water and drink from the questionably clean well. But that during our absence the monkeys also had the looted entire food supplies are pretty annoying, after all, despite all the stresses and strains, we didn't even have breakfast today. It was not possible to clarify when the boat will arrive due to the lack of a battery in the phone.

Hungry and rather annoyed, we soon head for the river, hoping the boat will arrive on time. Think, after just under a minute on the muddy jungle path in the constant company of the peccary, we reach the brooding hot beach. The only available shade is one temporary shelterwhich we now have to share with the stubborn pig. But that's not good enough that the pig lives up to its name and pees on our laid out rain poncho, drinks from it and tosses in it =) After waiting a good two hours, the boat comes after all!

But we can hardly believe our eyes, next to the boss and two other employees a whole group of new tourists on board. The boss is deeply indignant from all that she has experienced and apologizes as much as she can. We're supposed to be in the office in La Paz at least all of our money back to get. The lodge is now being closed for renovation for at least two weeks and new staff is being sought.

The one is still waiting for us just under three hours drive upstream back to Rurrenabaque. For the two Englishmen Sarah and Chris there is no longer enough for their flight and their whole program is mixed up.

Back in Rurrenabaque, we also report what has happened to the office. After a soothing shower, the four of us go out to eat and have a drink
