At the witch market of La Paz

  • Marvel at all sorts of bizarre goods at the witches' market (Mercado de Hechicería) in La Paz
  • Detailed tour of the city center
  • Evening shopping tour

Despite sleeping in and having a comfortable bed, we both have a slight headache. So the drastic difference in height is still noticeable. At breakfast we meet a Swiss couple who even top our travel time. And how! Fabienne and Johann are soon at the end of their two-year trip around the world (more information at: www.luckytravellers.com). Then we both write some more diaries and plan the afternoon tour of the city.

We march into the center on the same route as yesterday. This time, too, we stroll through numerous souvenir stands until we get to the famous Mercado de Hechicería, the witch market. Here you can buy all kinds of bizarre goods for performing occult rites and traditional healing methods. The best known example of this are the dried ones Llama fetuses and toucan beaks, but there are also all kinds of herbs, powders, tinctures and elixirs.

We walk on to the Iglesia de San Francisco, which is now eagerly visited at Easter time. Right next door is the Mercado Lanza. Arranged in small boxes, you will find pretty much everything your heart desires, sorted thematically. In one of these stalls we drink a fruit juice before continuing to the main square of La Paz: the Plaza Murillo. Hundreds of pigeons fill the pretty square surrounded by the presidential palace, congress and the cathedral. We rummage through other busy streets in the center before we take a rest in a cafe.

In the meantime we have decided on another Souvenir package to send home. So now we buy big. Niki buys a large leather bag while I buy a warm alpaca sweater and a present for Mam. Of course, the obligatory haggling over the price should not be missing here. The remaining money is just enough for the traditional dinner before we take a taxi back to the hotel.
