Maras and Moray

  • Tour to the Agricultural Terraces of the Incas in Moray and on to the Salineras of Maras
  • Continue by taxi to Ollantaytambo
  • Train ride to Aguas Calientes, the starting point for Machu Picchu

The big rucksack is again deposited in the hostel for the next two days. We are picked up by a guy and march into the center. The whole thing is a bit chaotic, but in the end we are sitting in the Tourist bus. After a good half an hour we leave the paved main road and are now shaken up a lot. First, let's see the fascinating ones Agricultural terraces of the Incas near Moray at.

The gradations create an easy on each level different microclimatewhich the Incas used to adapt certain seeds and tubers to the great height. A brilliant system that is clearly visible thanks to today's maintenance.

The complex, consisting of two large and two smaller amphitheaters, was dug deep into the ground. After a tour with information from our guide, we continue to the second goal of the tour: the Salineras de Maras.

Already in the times of the Incas the salt water of the spring brook was dammed here in the numerous basins. The sun dries up the pools and the blocks of salt can be harvested. It still happens today. The facility belongs to a company, which is why the expensive tourist pass is once again not valid and an additional 10 Sol entry is due. The white salt stands in stark contrast to the increasingly gray sky.

We drive back to the main road, where we and three Koreans leave the tour early. It would go to the town of Chinchero and then back to Cusco.

But we have ours at 1.30 p.m. Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the starting point for Machu Picchu! The five of us are squeezed into a car and taken to the Ollantaytambo train station in about 40 minutes.

Once there, there is still enough time to eat a delicious chicken soup. After a bit of waiting, the time has come Panorama train from Peru Rail drives in and we take our comfortable seats.

The ride leads the rough Rio Urubamba - a whitewater paradise - along through spectacular, but cloud-shrouded valleys. You can literally watch how the landscape becomes greener with decreasing height.

When we arrive in the chaotic and totally touristy Aquas Calientes, we go to our hotel room. Then we buy expensive tickets for the bus ride up to the ruins for tomorrow morning, go and eat and go to bed early.
