Day trip to the Indian market in Otavalo

  • By taxi accompanied by Maayan and Yotam to Otavalo
  • Explore the famous Indian market and buy souvenirs
  • Visit Peguche waterfall

Yesterday we arranged a trip to Otavalo with a taxi driver. Then we spontaneously arrived Maayan and Yotam asked if you would like to join us. So today at 7.30 a.m., the four of us go to the hotel Town famous across the country for its Saturday market.

We have a lot to tell each other and then I read something while the others are still sleeping. On the way we stop at one Hat makers a. The hut became world famous during the Construction of the Panama Canal originally come from the Ecuadorian highlands. Niki buys an original Panama hat as a souvenir for $ 25. The hat can be conveniently rolled up and later has its original shape again.

After two hours drive we reach the idyllic Laguna San Pablo in the background of which the Imbabura volcano could be seen in better weather.

Then we reach them as well Plaza de Ponchoswhere every day the traders set up their stands and various traditional crafts to offer. We stroll through the spacious grounds, with the two women in particular being in their element. Niki buys traditional necklaces, another leather backpack and an alpaca scarf. There's not much more to it, after all, the backpack is already full. Maayan also buys jewelry, a backpack and a scarf.

The majority of the same products are offered here as before in Peru and Bolivia. Only backpacks, jewelry and T-shirts are a little different. Overall I got mine from market hoped for a little more, which may also be due to the fact that we already have many similar and partly nicer and more authentic markets visited. On Saturdays the market has to be many times larger and attract not only countless tourists but also the local population. There is also the animal market to explore. In order to escape the constant rain a bit, we go to a restaurant where we eat deliciously.

Now we're still equipping that Peguche waterfall a visit and round off our full-day excursion. We drive back to Quito, where Niki and I get off at Plaza Foch, have a drink and up Tobi and Nina waiting. The two arrived from Baños this afternoon. We'll go out to eat together and have an entertaining evening.
