Jungle hike to La Miel Beach, Panama

  • Motorboat trip to Capurgana
  • Hike via Sapzurro to the sandy beach of La Miel in Panama
  • Shop rum in the duty free store for our tour to San Blas

That’s waiting at 8 a.m. in the morning Speedboat on the beach of Necocli. Barefoot wade into knee-deep water and climb on board. An hour and a half later we reach the wonderful coastline of Capurgana. Not far from the port we find shelter in the Hostel Capurgana, which is run by the Swiss emigrant Silvio. He gives us some information about the surrounding region.

We choose in To hike towards the border. The path is steeper than expected through the jungle and is quite slippery. Although we are certainly not optimally prepared with our flip-flops. The steep, muddy descent towards the wonderful bay then becomes a real slide.

In the extremely manageable and very cozy and typical caribbean When Sapzurro arrives, something is eaten first. After waiting almost an hour, we get delicious shrips with the usual rice, salad and patacones (fried plantain chips). Yes, the atmosphere here is very relaxed and everything just happens in a different pace than we are used to.

The most beautiful sandy beach in the region is right on the other side of the hill: La Miel. But this is already on the territory Panamas, which is why we have to briefly show the passport at the border, but there is no entry stamp here.

Right behind the coconut trees stands a Duty free store. Here you can buy the usual products, especially local alcoholic beverages can be bought at bargain prices. For example, a 1.5 liter bottle Quality rum Abuelo for 9 USD. For the multi-day tour, of course, we also buy a bottle, which is almost part of the basic equipment.

Then we bathe in crystal clear, turquoise water and let us rock back and forth in the weak waves. We'll be coming a few soon Talk to Colombians. We talk to each other in a mixture of Spanish and English Rum flows in regular rounds. The hoped-for return boat to Capurgana is unfortunately no longer available, so we will soon be on the long way back. Niki and I walk barefoot, which is almost more practical on the slippery surface. However, caution is advised, after all we see one twice Snake scurry away. During the descent, Niki nudges her little toes, which then protrude unnaturally. It shouldn't have broken, for that dislocated. The Colombian puts him back into place and then we three men have the pleasure of carrying Niki back to the village. Although I can only help to a limited extent barefoot on steep terrain.

Back in Capurgana you go straight to Infirmarywhere one. Nurse examines Niki's foot. She cannot make an exact diagnosis either, but she is of the same opinion. So the main thing is to put your foot up. After a delicious dinner, a local masseuse comes by and massages Niki's toe. The whole thing is pretty painful, but it should help.
