Liquid Sunshine

  • Bearviewing on the Chilkoot River
  • Stop at the Haines Library
  • Take the ferry through the northern part of the Inside Passage to Juneau
  • Camping in the Tongas National Forest just outside of June

This is what Alaskans call rain, because it is not for nothing that coastal rainforest grows here in the southeast. This morning it is pouring down all the time, as if the sky had opened its floodgates. But I won't let that dissuade me from my plan. after all, that doesn't bother the animals. Again I drive to the Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site and search the course of the river. Unsuccessful for the time being, so now I'm sitting in the car, having breakfast and reading and waiting. Then the same bear lady appears as yesterday and fishes again at the gate. I watch the she-bear for a while, but for once I hardly take any photos. In these lighting conditions it wouldn't be a great picture anyway. What's more, the grille doesn't look exactly nice.

Around 10 a.m. I drive to Haines and settle down again in the library. I write a diary and sort through the pictures from the last few days. Then the blog will be updated and I'm looking for more information about Glacier Bay National Park. At the beginning of the afternoon the weather is slowly getting better. I drive along Mud Bay Road to a viewpoint on the Chilkat Peninsula. Here I overlook the Chilkat Inlet and see the mountains and glaciers on the other side. Then I drive north to the Ferry Terminal. Since I have almost an hour left and Chilkoot Lake is not far, I try my luck there one last time. In fact, a bear is standing in the middle of the street and is going fishing again.

Now I'm going to the ferry terminal and loading my car for the crossing to Juneau. The remote capital of Alaska is actually not accessible by road. While waiting, I find out about the possibilities of a trip to Glacier Bay National Park. Since tomorrow morning will be the only possible connection for me, it is time to act. So I buy a ticket for the crossing to Gustavus, the starting point for Glacier Bay.

The drive through the Lynn Chanel takes about 4 hours until I arrive in Juneau late in the evening. On the way, the cloud cover now rises more often and I see the wonderful island world of the Inside Passage. I eat the leftover food and read. In Juneau I briefly find out about a nearby campground and continue to the Auke Bay Campground.
