I get up at 8 a.m. and drive off. At 70 Mile House they fill up and buy milk for breakfast. Then I continue on the Cariboo Highway. The landscape is now getting drier. In the dry prairie of thorns, one thinks more likely to be in the southwest of the USA or in the Mediterranean region than in southwest Canada. I have a leisurely breakfast between the imposing rocks of the Marble Canyon and enjoy the late summer day. Since it's so beautiful at the moment, and I've made pretty good progress, I'll stay here a little longer. I put on my swimming trunks and jump into the cool water of the lake. I'll read something before I go on.
Via Fraser River Canyon and Lillooet, the Duffy Lake Road leads me over the mountain passes to Pemberton. What is remarkable here is the abrupt change in the landscape. The country is getting greener again and leads into the coastal mountains, where the eye falls on snow-capped mountain peaks.
Finally I reach the potato growing area around Pemberton and on to the Whistler Mountains. The Canadian ski resort has been world-famous since the Olympic Games at the latest. There is a lot of traffic chaos in the village, as the annual GranFondo bike race takes place today. I walk briefly through Whistler Village before looking for an expensive but comfortable campground a bit outside.
