- Breakfast in the glorious morning sun right by the sea
- Take a short walk down to the beach
- Visit to the Pacific Rim National Park
- Hike on the well-developed sidewalk through the jungle
- Visit to Ucluclet
- In the hotpot
First of all, we have an extensive breakfast in a wonderful location. Then we drive back to the information center at the intersection where the road turns towards Tofino and Ucluclet. We decide to drive to the starting point of the Rainforest Trail and do the two short hikes of approx. 1 kilometer through the fairytale forest of the Canadian Pacific coast. Unfortunately today there are only very few spots of original, mature rainforest with gigantic, centuries-old trees. Some of the trees were already here when Columbus arrived in North America! Even seemingly dead giant trees serve as the basis for new life.
The entire ecosystem of the temperate rainforest on the North American Pacific coast also benefits from the salmon migrations. The protein-rich fish are eaten by the bears and many remains are left, which in turn serve as a food source for scavengers. All these animals excrete the partially digested residues, which serve as fertilizer for the soil. An almost unbelievable cycle of life!
After a lunch snack we drive to Ucluclet to arrange a small kayak tour for tomorrow. Then we pay a visit to the shopping center and the local liquors store. We cook our dinner at the comfortable Surf Junction Campground, which is rather expensive at $ 35. Then I enjoy the warming bath in the hotpot while Niki warms up in the shower.
