Beachcombing on Long Beach

  • Hike down Schooners Trail to Long Beach
  • Shopping stop in tourist Tofino
  • Return via Port Alberni to Fanny Bay

When we finally wake up it is already 10 o'clock and another beautiful day is waiting for us. We drive again to the Pacific Rim National Park to do the hike on the Schooners Trail down to the beach of the same name. The path leads on a sidewalk with many stairs through the dense jungle down to the beach. The dense vegetation is truly beautiful to look at. It is ebb tide and the small, wooded islands are currently freely accessible. On the beach there is a lot of driftwood, glue, shells and everything else that the sea washes up. We walk a bit along the beach (so-called beachcombing) before we turn back and drive the few kilometers to Tofino. The lively tourist town is particularly popular among surfers, even if surfing is only possible in a wetsuit, because the 15 degree cold water is not really ideal for swimming.

We replenish our food supplies and drive back towards Port Alberni and further east. Now Niki can take over the wheel too. We cross the interior of the island in a sometimes winding drive until we have reached the east coast, which is protected by the Pacific and therefore drier. We find a cozy campground near Fanny Bay where we cook, wash and shower.
