- Hike to Marymere Falls through dense rainforest
- Second hike to the larger and more water-rich Sol Duc Falls
- Continue to the coastal section of the Olympic National Park to La Push
- Enjoy the sunset at Second Beach
We start by driving to Marymere Falls, where we take a short hike to a pretty, narrow waterfall. The path again leads through dense jungle with lots of ferns and mosses. A real fairytale forest in green surrounds us. After a short drive up to the Sol Duc Hot Springs, we march through a similar backdrop to other, somewhat more watery falls: the Sol Duc Falls. The stones in the stream are covered by a real carpet of moss. I take some long exposures of the running water before walking back to the parked car.
We continue towards the coast. We forego a detour to the remote Cap Flattery and Shi Shi Beach and continue to La Push. After all, there are similar backdrops to be seen here and without a lot of additional kilometers. The place should be familiar to Twilight fans, as the story takes place here in the remote northwestern United States.
We cook our dinner a little earlier in order to be ready in time for the sunset at Second Beach. Again a half-hour hike through dense rainforest takes us to our destination. The spray from the waves of the Pacific literally shines in the low evening sun. The photogenic rocks in the surf are truly a unique backdrop. Immediately afterwards the sun disappears behind a few clouds on the horizon, which hardly detracts from the grandiose atmosphere. Over an hour later and with lots of photos in our luggage, we make our way back through the forest to the parking lot.
