Winter conditions at Crater Lake

  • Drive up to Crater Lake
  • The lake is already beautifully embedded in the snow
  • short hike along the demolition edge
  • Continue to the Oregon Coast to Reedsport

Today the journey up to the already wintry one is waiting Crater Lake. We drive about two hours until we get to the first snow arrive. At the Visitors Center let's find out what can still be done at this time of the year. A few days ago the rim road around the crater had to be closed because of the snow. So the only thing left is the drive up to the Crater Village. We watch the interesting documentation about the park and chat with the ranger.

Then we drive the last few miles up to the Crater Village. Winter conditions already prevail here at over 2100 m and the temperatures are accordingly. The region is considered to be one of the snowiest on earth. From here we enjoy the impressive view down to the crater lake for the first time. Then a warming soup is waiting for us.

Crater Lake was formed by one about 7700 years ago enormous volcanic eruption of Mount Mazamas. The mountain lost up to 1000 m in height and the eruption left a huge hole. Over time, this hole has now filled with melt water. The almost 600 m deep lake is famous for its steel blue water, which is considered the clearest in the world.

We hike along the abortion edge in the direction of the Garfield Peaks, from where the view down to the crater lake is even more breathtaking. Our gaze wanders over to the Wizard Islandwhose shape already reveals its volcanic origin. In the meantime more and more clouds are gathering and slowly blocking the view down. Back at the souvenir shop there is a warm drink for us before we start the long journey towards the coast. As a result of the time difference, it is already dark at 5 p.m. On the way we dine at another fast food chain before we finally go to Reed sport arrive and look for a motel.
