North along the Oregon Coast

  • Travel north along the Oregon Coast
  • Stop at the Sea Lion Caves
  • Another stop at the famous Cannon Beach
  • Continue to Portland

We have breakfast in our practical room and pack our things. It rained all night and this morning doesn't want to change that either. in the pouring rain we get from the worth seeing Oregon Dunes Area little to see. We stop at some vantage points, otherwise the ATV rental companies along the route are particularly noticeable. Especially on summer weekends, this is done with the peace and quiet. Fortunately, only part of the area is approved for this.

After Florence we reach the Sea Lion Caves. For 12$ per capita you can take the elevator down here on the cliff to sea level. There she is waiting largest sea cave in America to us. Unfortunately, the majority of the sea lions are out in the sea foraging at this time of year. In any case, nobody is in the cave. And otherwise only a few can be seen outside in the spray of the wild surf. When the cave is filled with life, this must be a real spectacle.

A little disappointed, we continue northwards. On the way we eat at a bakery until we finally south of Tillamook branch off towards the Three Capes Scenic Loop. The first thing we do is achieve that Cape Kiwanda, the second follows Cape Lookout, although this is only moderately worth seeing in these weather conditions. In the absence of local maps and signaling, we miss the third one, Cape Meares, and come back to the Highway 101.

When it had already darkened at 4:50 p.m., we finally reached our goal: Cannon Beach with the famous and imposing Haystack rock on an idyllic beach. Today the hoped-for magnificent sunset for the postcard photo will unfortunately not work. Instead, the rain is picking up again, making being on the beach an uncomfortable affair.

Then we continue towards Portland. Shortly before entering the big city, we eat at the Asian fast food chain Panda Express and then take a tour of the shopping complex Fred Meyer. Soon after we come in Troutdale where we will spend the night in the Travelodge.
