Picture book setting at the end of the world

  • Buy food supplies and take care of organizational matters
  • Hike along Lake Gray to a small island
  • Climb the windy Mirador El Condor in wonderful evening light

Cookies, a yoghurt and a banana serve as a simple breakfast. We drive to the bus station, where we find that the desired bus trip to El Calafate, Argentina for Mam and Dad's onward journey is already booked out. So they will now have to leave on Thursday evening. We quickly adjust the reservation at the hotel and buy food supplies.

Around noon we finally set off towards the national park. Today we drive directly from the south to the Main entrance to the park. The route is quite lengthy, but after a short while two hours we have that Campground Pehoé and you can move into our simple cabana. No water, no electricity, only three beds, but a fireplace, sleeping bags, blankets and Mätteli for the fourth person and last but not least wonderfully located!

We’re going to move on soon, for a good one hour hike along the Lago Grays out to make an island. As usual, blows in at exposed locations violent wind otherwise it is also today pleasantly warm. The cloud cover slowly thickens as we pass the viewpoint over the lake to the vast, far away Glaciar Gray to reach. Here drifts in in bright light blue Iceberg of enormous dimensions. Due to the steadily strong wind, the trees here grow crookedly into the sky.

Unexpectedly, the clouds lifted increasingly on our way back. In this weather we should do something, after all, the restaurant does not open for dinner until 8 p.m.

That's how we climb it Mirador El Condor right behind our campground. The steep path through the skeletal, burned trees is well worth the effort. I climb the last steep meters alone, to finally a unique one 360 degree panorama to behold.

In the early evening sun, the pinnacles begin to turn lightly. Immediately after the descent we go to a beautifully located restaurant to eat while we witness one through the panoramic windows fantastic sunset will. I just have to go out in between to take some pictures! At 9:56 p.m. the sun finally sinks on the horizon and changes color to the rest of the clouds.

We light a fire in the stove, which is supposed to warm us during the cold Patagonian night. Then we slip into bed.
