On a puma stalk

  • Hike to the Mirador los Cuernos with a view of the blue Lago Nordernskjöld
  • Another hike along the park boundary with sighting of numerous guanacos
  • Try again on some night shots

Another beautiful day with hot temperatures awaits us. In any case, the weather is not at all typical for the Patagonian summer, which, according to park rangers, may have something to do with climate change. For breakfast we drag again from the generous provisions we brought with us.

A little later than yesterday, we then set off towards the Salto Grandes and the rapids preceding it. Here we start the one hour long Hike to the Mirador los Cuernos. The mostly flat path is a feast for the eyes, the striking mountain range rises in front of us, which has perhaps become the symbol of the park for all of Patagonia. There are many skeletons of burned trees, as a few years ago a major fire hit large parts of the park. The fire was tragically started by a careless tourist. We discover one on one of the dead trees Carakara. When we arrive at the lookout point, we have a wonderful view of the Lake Nordernskjöld and the mountain range rewards. From a little further away, the scenery looks even better!

After a snack, we continue to the eastern park boundary. Most of the guanacos live in this area, so the chances of seeing an extremely shy puma are slightly higher here. We wander right through the barely shy guanaco herds along the park boundary, up the hilly transition phase from the pampas to the Andes and intensively search the surrounding hills. The Torres del Paine National Park is one of the best places in the world to observe the extremely shy big cat in the wild, but it still requires a lot of patience, a little luck and a good eye. In any case, food and hiding places can be found here in abundance. Numerous skeletons along the path reveal the presence of the robber.

We enjoy the view and the weather and wait. Up to 25 degrees today is probably the warmest day. On condor moves its tracks in the sky. We often witness one Chase between guanaco bullswho defend their territory against rivals.

On the campground you can shower and eat in the restaurant. Niki and I then go to the Salto Grandeto capture the great evening mood.
