A superlative opera house: Teatro Colon

  • Guided tour through the magnificent building of the Teatro Colon
  • Leather shopping tour on Calle Murillo
  • Continue shopping tour through the Abasto shopping center

Our guided tour through the interior of the fascinating starts at 11 a.m. Colon Theater. Even from the outside, a work of art reveals its true splendor only inside. Different colored marble with lavish decor, magnificent chandeliers and rooms of enormous dimensions leave us amazed.
The opera hall is considered to be one of the best acoustically in the world and is a single eye width. The magnificent building, which opened in 1907, was the largest in the southern hemisphere until the opening of the Sydney Operahouse and bears witness to the prosperity of that time. While Europe suffered from the two world wars, the Argentine economy flourished. Above the central rows of seats are seven more floors: from the luxurious boxes to the cheap standing room under the richly decorated ceiling. After the renovation, which was recently completed with a long delay, the house shines in full splendor.

Then we take the subway into Leather shopping paradise on Murillo Street. Numerous leather boutiques line the street on both sides with all imaginable leather products. The goods are extremely inexpensive by European standards, so high-quality leather jackets can be bought for the equivalent of - thanks to the blue dollar exchange rate - under 200 CHF, belts and wallets for less than 20 francs. Niki buys a belt from the local specialty Capibala leather and a wallet.

We buy a snack in the supermarket and walk back towards the city center. We achieve that Abasto shopping center with multiplex cinema and everything that goes with it. In terms of price, even with the blue dollar exchange rate, import fashion is not necessarily cheap. It should still be one or the other souvenir. Time flies by and so it is already time for dinner, which we have in the diverse food court. We take the subway back to the hostel.
