Copacabana - place of choice on Lake Titicaca

  • Three hour bus ride from La Paz to Copacabana
  • Climbing the hill Cerro Calvario with a great view of the town

We leave La Paz early in the morning. We take a taxi to the Bus stationwhere our bus ride to Lake Titicaca starts at 8 a.m. The highest navigable lake on earth (3812 meters above sea level) and largest lake in South America covers one Area of 8,000 km2. Possibly created by the folding of the Andes, the lake is a remnant of the primeval sea and still shows today one percent salt water up and should Seahorse accommodate.

Finally we reach the place San Pablo de Tiquina, where the bus is loaded onto a raft and over the Strait of Tiquina translated. For safety reasons, we passengers take the speedboat over to San Pedro de Tiquina and wait for the bus to arrive.

Another hour later we come in Copacabana at. Yes, the world famous Rio de Janeiro beach is idyllic after that, however pretty touristy Named election driver town. As early as the times of the Inca Empire, the place was said to have magical powers and to this day numerous people from Bolivia and southern Peru come here for various festivities - including Easter.

We take a rest in the hotel before we get into the Look around town and explore us after Tour offers to Isla del Sol and the smaller Isla del la Luna. Since there are only nonsensical half-day tours that visit the remarkable Inca temple Iñaq Uyu on the moon island, we decide on the full-day tour to Isla del Sol for an inexpensive 35 BOB, the equivalent of 5 francs.

The Bolivian cuisine with all that fried food is slowly but surely getting to our necks. That's why we're twice as happy to discover an Asian restaurant. Strengthened, we set out to climb the Local mountain Cerro Calvario (3966 m above sea level). We meet an American from today's bus ride who is accompanying us. We get them on the steep path thin mountain air clearly felt. The view of Lake Titicaca, Copacabana and the surrounding hills is really worth the effort.

We linger a little and enjoy the only rays of sunshine on this cool, unfriendly day.

When it slowly gets dark, we make our way back. We satisfy our hunger pangs with a yogurt. Then we'll see you in the cozy hotel room - with hot water shower and heating, neither of which can be taken for granted in Bolivia - watch a movie again.
