Brazil pictures: My photo highlights

Brazil - the most biodiverse country on earth

The fifth largest country in the world and the largest on the South American continent: Brazil, with its multitude of different habitats, is home to the greatest biodiversity on our planet. And there is still the almost impenetrable Amazon rainforest still new species to discover. In these remote areas there are still isolated, indigenous, partly uncontacted people Primitive peoples

Rio de Janeiro

Copacabana, Ipanema, Sugar Loaf, Corcovado, Favela, Carnival, Samba, Cristo Redentor are just a few synonyms that come to mind when we hear the name Rio de Janeiro. Rio is the second largest city in Brazil and is embedded in a fantastic scenery. But like no other it stands for the contrasts of modern Brazil such as rich and poor, black and white, tradition and modernity. The joy of life of the Cariocas does not detract from this. The viewpoints Corcovado with the impressive statue of Christ and the Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) offer a unique panorama over the granite rocks covered with remnants of the Tijuca rainforest and favelas and the Guanabara Bay with their wonderful beaches.

To the south of Rio de Janeiro there are some wonderful stalls and the very interesting Portuguese colonial city Paraty

Ouro Preto - black gold from Minas Gerais

In the hinterland of Minas Gerais are a multitude Colonial cities with magnificent baroque and rococo churches - also known as Barocco Mineiro - to discover. Especially the fabulous Ouro Preto with its old town, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city got its name because of its huge gold deposits, which were colored black by iron oxide impurities, resulting in the most significant 18th century gold rush led. Hhere should 1200 tons of gold have been mined by black slaves under unimaginable conditions. she made Ouro Preto (black gold) then richest city in the new worldAlone in the church of Nossa Senhora do Pilar 434 kg of gold leaf are said to have been worked into the lavishly decorated walls. Are also worth seeing the neighboring city Mariana and the baroque jewel Tiradentes.

Amazon myth

The green lung, as the largest rainforest on earth is also called, lies to about 60 % in Brazil. The metropolis of millions lies in the heart of the Amazon Manaus. The really untouched core zones are, however, far away and it is accordingly difficult to get into them. That's why we opted for Bolivia and Peru as the starting point for our Amazon expeditions.

Natural paradise of the Pantanal

At its southern end the forest changes into the drier, savannah-like one Cerrado and the marshland Pantanal about. On a safari along the Transpantaneira you get a great insight into the natural paradise of the Pantanal. The world's largest marshland is a habitat for many animal species that are also at home in the Amazon. Except that here with a little less vegetation the chances of sighting jaguars, tapirs, caimans, coatis, macaw parrots, Toucan or ant-eater are a little bigger. But the Pantanal is also a prime example of sustainable tourism and agriculture in harmony with nature.

Fresh water snorkeling in Bonito

This is hardly known to western tourists Bonito is becoming increasingly popular with Brazilians. The city in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul is an up-and-coming ecotourism center with many waterfalls, caves, crystal clear rivers and underground lakes. The cave Gruta do Lago Azul with the deep blue lake, Fresh water snorkeling in crystal clear Rio Olho D'Agua and watch red macaws at sandstone craters Buraco das Araras are the highlights of the region.

Natural wonder Iguaçu

Probably the most impressive waterfalls in the world are located on the border with Argentina seven natural wonders of the world: the Foz do Iguaçu or Iguazu Falls. 150 meters wide, 700 meters long, between 60 and 85 meters high, with breathtaking water masses and located in a beautiful national park. The main case is particularly impressive Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat), which piles up a huge spray. The Iguazu National Park protects the remains of the extremely endangered Mata Atlântica Rainforest.
