Ouro Preto - Black Gold

  • Walking tour of the colonial city of Ouro Preto
  • Visit the magnificent colonial churches of the city

Even in the morning at 5 a.m. the party is still in full swing, but has meanwhile moved to the room next door. There is only limited thinking about sleep. When it finally comes to rest we get some sleep. At around 10 a.m. we read emails and find out about the next few days.

After a shower we have another delicious meal Acai mug for breakfast. then we march to the bus station to find out about the connections and to buy tickets for tomorrow's onward journey to Tiradentes. Again, this turns out to be not that simple, after all, hardly anyone speaks English and the various bus companies only cooperate moderately with one another. Since the most direct connection is in the evening at a rather tourist-unfriendly time, we decide again to take the detour via Belo Horizonte. From there buses to Sao Joao del Rei should run several times a day. So let's be surprised.

We march down the steep streets past the Igreja São Francesco de Paula to the most ornate church in the colonial city: the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Pilar. More than 400 kg of gold are said to have been used in the typically baroque, richly decorated interior of the church. That is why the church is considered one of the finest examples of the Brazilian Baroque. We march on through the busy alleys before we at Niki's request Subway have a snack. We buy provisions for tomorrow and take another break in the room. Then we go to the same restaurant from the previous evening.
